I knew my husband for many years before he became a cop, and I could see the changes in his personality and physically. Here’s how my husband changed after becoming a cop. He will see the world through a new darker lens. He sees all of the bad things in the world that you and I don’t get to see. He may become more careful in going to certain places or allowing you to go to certain places because of the unique things that he knows. For example, I wanted to try a nearby Mexican restaurant. He said, “have you ever noticed they’re busy at night? It’s a prostitution ring.” WHHATT? I was shocked at first. I still am, but it’s become somewhat normal now for him to surprise me with a new fact he learned about a location. I have some funny reels about this on my Instagram page. He will probably get into better shape physically. He may want to spend more time working out. Support him on this. Encourage him to get his frustrations out at the gym especially in MMA and BJJ classes where he will learn skills for work. This will benefit him physically and mentally. I talk more about this is my blog on being a supportive police wife. He may want to spend more time alone or cozy at home. Your home will be his safe space. He works in a hyper-stimulating environment where he has to be hypervigilant. He can relax at home. Let him do just that. Enjoy peace and quiet with him. He may want added security for you. It’s unique to share a life with a police officer. Here’s how my police officer husband has changed: Less emotions. Overtime, your police spouse will adjust to seeing many awful things. To protect themselves, they may become more emotionless. There may not be many ups nor downs that you can see in them. Less trusting in others. Sometimes I think my husband doesn’t trust anyone. He sees way too many untrustworthy people at work, and that spills into our personal lives. If you are social, it’s important to encourage your spouse to still have friends over to your home anyway. Ask your spouse to do this for you. Dark humor. Your spouse will be funnier! He will be quick with jokes. But, a lot of times his sense of humor will be dark. This is a coping mechanism to deal with all the junk he has to see at work. The awesome part is that you will become funnier as well! Joke with him. At first it might seem like too much. He is told by his department that they are to intervene no matter where they are if crime occurs. My husband feels like he would be helpless without his gun, so he wears it on him 24/7. Many officers, especially family men and women, try to get back on their family’s sleep schedule on their days off. The issue is that most night shift workers only have a 2-3 days off before going back to work, so the body does not adjust to night sleeping. Sure, this means that the night shifter may not ever be on the same sleep schedule as everyone else in the family, but it will improve their health. A second major tip is to improve mindfulness, which includes mind and body awareness. This can be accomplished through meditation, such as meditation apps, and exercises including yoga include mindfulness. Don’t stop reading. I really believe in the power of putting your mind to something, and it’s evidence-based. One research study by Christopher et al. Four 15-minute bright light exposure intermittently throughout night shift have been shown to improve circadian rhythms according to Smith et al. (2009). These tips will help your shift worker as well though! Do a 15-20 HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout or yoga in the morning or afternoon during each day. This will help your body to feel more ready to relax later when you are ready for sleep. I know it can be difficult to fit in a workout. I love “MadFit” or “Syndey Cummings” on YouTube, which are free HIIT workouts that do not require much space or equipment. No, I don’t get paid to promote her workouts, but I do them myself. She helped me get my ads back after babies! This tip is good for both of you. Getting adequate exercise will boost both of your moods and improve sleep. Get a sleep machine. My husband, my kids, and I love the Dohm’s Sleep Machine, which mimics the sound of a box fan. Get Black-out curtains. Use calming essential oils such as lavender. CrossFit helps him stay strong for lifting, running, and other necessary part of his job. BJJ helps him to be able to wrestle if needed. My husband chooses to workout at specific gyms that aren’t necessarily close to our home. It took me time to realize just why he went to these specific gyms. When I visited both of them at different times, I realized that both of the instructors and gym owners shared common values with my officer, such as support for law enforcement, and both places were very supportive environments. Instructors met the people working out where they were physically. For the police officer diet, think macronutrients. Protein, carbs, and fat. Our officers need a lot of protein for muscle growth and sustaining muscle, carbs for energy, and enough fat to keep their warm on cold nights. When you plan and pack meals for them, think of these three critical macros: protein, carbs, and fats. Healthy examples of a meal that includes all three are: 1) Chicken (protein) quesadilla with avocado (healthy fat) on a whole wheat tortilla (carb) and 2) Cashew (healthy fat) tofu (protein) stir fry with broccoli and brown rice (carb). Even though my husband’s schedule changes sometimes every 4 weeks the stability I create for myself to meal plan the same day each week helps me to actually get it done. I typically prepare Rick 4 “hot” meals each week and make him a sandwich as a 2nd meal for each workday in addition to snacks. I plan my dinner meals for the week using a whiteboard calendar. I either do drive-up or grocery delivery. I meal prep and hot meals at the same time that I make our Sunday dinners. I typically just double of Sunday dinner recipe. I make the sandwich the night before his shift. I always meal prep all “lunches” for Rick, our children, and myself the night before so I’m not rushing in the morning the next day. Injured on Duty Local Beef Stew with Rice Also known as Hawaiian Beef Stew, this recipe was made by my grandmother in Hawaii for my mom and her four siblings on the Big Island. Stew is often a comfort food perfect for a healing, cozy evening at home. I love that this stew includes meat and vegetables for a balanced meal. This stew is often paired with sticky white rice due to Asian influence. To make this meal a bit healthier, I use brown rice. Ingredients 1-2 lbs. beef stew 1 cup diced celery 3 tablespoons ketchup 2 teaspoons salt 1 tablespoon soy sauce 2 tablespoons of flour 6 carrots (sliced) 6 potatoes (peeled & cut into chunks) 2 large onions (chopped) ¼ teaspoon of pepper 1 clove garlic 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for meat version only) Cooked brown rice Instructions Brown the stew meat in one pot. Drain. Cover the meat with water. Cover and simmer the meat for 1.5 hours. If making the meat stew, add all ingredients into the pot. If making a vegetarian version, separate ½ or ¼ of the vegetables into a different pot depending on how many people in the household are vegetarian. Cover both pots of ingredients with water. Cover and simmer the stew for 30 minutes. I love adding a can of sweet corn into my chili as well as adding a dollop of sour cream on top to serve. Spread over a bed of brown rice. My police husband and I visited Disneyland with our two boys who were ages 4 and 6 at the time. We also had sets of two grandparents with us on the trip as well. Stay on or near the resort for convenience. Many people suggest staying on the resort. Because of our large, multi-family unit that needed accommodations, we all started at an a Vrbo short-term rental 4-bedroom single family home a block away from the resort. This saved us money on food and separate hotel rooms for each family. We brought our own groceries, but we still had some meals at the park. You could walk to the resort, but because we had small children, we drove and parked. Click here to search for short-term rentals near Disneyland in Anaheim on Vrbo. Visit weekdays for an empty park experience. We went from Thursday-Saturday. Thursday was so empty compared to the other days. Arrive to the park right when it opens for an empty park experience. Disneyland opened at 8:00am each day. We arrived at 8 or 8:30am each day, and there were hardly any lines for rides between 8:00 and 10:00am each day. If you have kids, bring or rent a stroller. Our kids are older, but man there is a lot of walking, so bring the stroller or rent one. We rented one at Disney. The rentable strollers were available right as you enter the park. It was very convenient. Order food on your phone, so you don’t have to wait. While in line for a ride, you can order food to pick up after. When Rick and I were long distance, had opposite schedules, and a time difference in our first few years of marriage, we decided that he would call me on his way home from work, which happened to be in the middle of the night my time. I did not care. This is what we needed to do in our police officer marriage to make it work. I wanted to make sure we could chat each day. We did not have kids then, so I could sleep in as needed. I looked forward to that moment to reconnect each day. Yes, this meant I sacrificed some sleep and was half asleep when we talked, but it was better than no talking at all. This really helped with preventing police wife depression and other common police wife struggles. Today, Rick and I text with each other most days. A phone call is used only if it is something really important. When we text each other, we ask how one another’s day is going. I tell Rick how our boys are doing that day, how my work day is going, etc. I update him about events coming up soon or things we might need to chat about later. Rick is not a big sharer/talker. He often sends me funny memes or jokes via text, but this is is way of connecting. He makes me laugh. Track Ovulation. If you are anything like me, you do not have a regular period, so it can be difficult to count the days until you ovulate. In an average menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs 14 days before the start of your next menstrual cycle. Here are options to track your ovulation. Use an app to track when you begin your menstrual cycle and when you are ovulating. Track your temperature. Most people have lower temps when their cycle first begins. Then, it rises when they are ovulating. Combined with the app method mentioned above, take your temp when you first wake each morning. Write down what your temp is or jot it down in your app notes. The temp will typically be 96°-98° before ovulation and then rise to 97°-99° ***Ovulation tests are what works best for me. We traveled to mainland Japan first and ended with a week in Okinawa for my lecture. In mainland Japan, we started in Tokyo, followed by Kyoto, and ended in Osaka. We biked across a red bridge overlooking a river in Kyoto. We also passed young people in traditional Japanese kimonos, which we did not see much of in Tokyo. I remember wearing one once when I was a kid for a performance in Hawaii. I was sweating as it was high humidity and 80 degrees. Unfortunately, I began to get a rash on my leg. We searched for a pharmacy. Not speaking the language, I was unsure how we could get help. Rick was a natural at exploring new places, and the Japanese people were also so kind in each city we visited. They went out of their way to communicate with us, using their phones to translate. I was forever grateful. We slowly rode down an alleyway. There was what looked to be a garage open to the alleyway; we could see chairs of men sitting, waiting for something inside. We caught a glimpse of young, barely dressed women inside as well. Rick told me that it was most likely adult dancing or prostitution. Without him there, I would not have thought that. That night in Kyoto, we were resting in our hotel room. Rick checked his email and was surprised to find an email from a human trafficking victim he thought had returned to prostitution. She came to him after he caught her prostituting to retrieve a cell phone that the police department took into custody. After fidgeting a bit and looking over her shoulder, Rick asked her what was wrong. She told him that her pimp, who trafficked her across state lines, was holding her young daughter captive. Concerned, Rick texted me that he would be home late. That night, he recruited other officers to find her daughter. Luckily, he eventually found the daughter in the middle of the night under the care of an older woman paid by the pimp. They placed her in a car seat in the patrol car and took her back to the station, where the young girl was placed in the custody of child welfare. Rick then informed the trafficking victim that her child had to be with child welfare but that she could be with her daughter again if she found safety herself. Rick also connected the trafficking victim with a social worker who provided peer support for human trafficking, who he met at the social work conference with me. He further arrested the pimp, but he was released before charges were made. Without a victim, there is no crime, and the trafficking victim did not want to face him in court. Rick lost touch with the victim; over time, he thought she went back to the pimp until he received the email. Her email chronologically outlined what happened after they lost touch. She had returned to the pimp for some time. She sent photos of her lowest moment with bruises covering her face. Those photos were followed by pictures of her happy with her daughter, and she thanked Rick for helping her. She told him that since she was beaten badly, she got the help she needed and could get her daughter back and move back to the state she came from. Rick hardly ever hears “thank you.” I know it meant the world to him. After visiting Osaka, we traveled to Okinawa by plane. Rick always liked to sit on the plane until most people got off before he deboarded the plane. Whenever we did this in the U.S., I found that we had to sit there for what seemed like forever. Japanese people were so much more efficient than Americans. They had their bags ready and each row of seats deboarded so quickly, one after another. My lack of patience appreciated it. It took me time to realize that Rick’s desire to wait allowed him to remain calm and deboard in a less crowded environment. We were picked up at the airport by our translator, a 93-year-old Okinawan man who referred to himself as “young.” He had a paper that said “Linton,” which made my day. He informed us that we would have dinner with a Professor who would host my trip. After getting settled in the hotel, an Okinawan social work student picked us up in his car with another student as a passenger. They had Jay-Z playing on the radio. Rick loves Jay-Z. One of the students was trilingual in Japanese, Okinawan, and English. The other did not speak English, but they rapped to the Jay-Z song much better than I ever could. The students immediately liked Rick and invited him to the next day's lecture. We originally thought Rick would just relax in the hotel while I lectured, but our students had other plans. The next day, we met at a classroom on campus. Students brought me and Rick coffee. Rick, unlike most cops, was not fond of coffee. He was told by a Training Officer, “Don’t be one of those cops stopping at Starbucks,” suggesting that those officers were lazy. It took Rick 15 years on the job before he began getting Starbucks occasionally. I, on the other hand, am obsessed with their drinks. I had never had an American student bring me coffee, even though I had been teaching as a university instructor for several years. The Okinawan social work students were fascinated by Rick’s work as a Los Angeles city police officer. They said that because of movies they had seen about Los Angeles, “I would be afraid to visit.”. On the last day of class, I asked Rick if he would present on his work in the gang unit in South Central, and he showed photos of gang members and tattoos. One of the photos was of a young boy. Rick said he talked to him one day and then learned that he had been shot dead the next day. I knew Rick had said that the gang members kept shooting each other, but it was much different to see a photo. Rick told this story with an emotionless tone, and I felt bad that he had to relive that memory. Prayer Heavenly Father, I pray for peace for my husband. I pray he can get away from it all and not worry about crime, victims, or perpetrators. I pray that he can lose himself in a different place of peace and calm. I will ask my husband to take his vacation time when he can so we can enjoy life together as a family. I wish for our home to be an escape from it all. As I described in my story about Christmas morning, I wanted that one tradition to be the same time/day each year. That is okay. I could create that stability. Of course, if you want to have a tradition at the same day/time each year and you are not sure if your spouse will be working at that time, it is important to communicate that with your spouse. Are they okay with you celebrating without them? Can you compromise? If it is important to you, tell them why. CrossFit Rick has gone to the same CrossFit gym for 7 years. For the first year, it made sense because the gym was right down the road from our house. Then, we moved about 30 minutes away and he continued to go to that gym. When I was in a resentful stage early on in our marriage with our young boys, I felt annoyed that he went to a gym so far away. That drive time could have been spent with our family. He was already gone so much to because of the long shift work hours, overtime, and court. While I had meal planning and prep down to help Rick gain muscle, It took me 6 years to attend a class with him at the gym (just last year- photo for proof!) to really see his reason why. Immediately, I saw the owner and his dog greet me and Rick. The owner and another coach asked us how we were doing and welcomed me to the gym. We were surrounded by flags including a thin blue line flag. As other gym members arrived, they also said hi to me and Rick. They wanted to talk to me to get to know me and ask if I was going to start working out there regularly. I felt very welcomed. The workout was adapted to meet my needs. The coach checked in on me throughout the workout. Everyone reported how many reps they did at the end and everyone cheered each other on. The environment and people were supportive of Rick as a person and of police. He felt safe. He didn't often get that at work. I finally knew why he drove 30 minutes for that specific gym. It helped me to feel less resentful and accept it. We recently have gone to his gym for two family events including a pumpkin carving event. We also met an amazing swim instructor there who taught Leonidas (my 5-year-old) how to swim! Visiting the Police Station For more on this topic, read my blog: Why a Police Wife Should Visit the Police Station We chose to move out to a suburb of Los Angeles where I work even though it makes Rick’s commute quite long. He feels safer with us living in the suburb when he’s away from us at work and can relax more on his days off. Rick is not a complainer. He doesn’t talk much about work unless I really push him to do so. He also changes his uniform at the station. He keeps his work and home life separate. This creates a healthy boundary for him to leave his stress at work and just enjoy his family time when he is home (although we know that’s not easy). While there are pros to separating his work and home life, it also prevents me from really empathizing with him. I also forget about his long commute or stressful days if he doesn’t tell me. Our young boys who are ages 5 and 7 do too. The first time we visited Rick at the station when my boys were little they had a blast. Rick was working in a gang unit. They got to sit in the car, press (almost) all the buttons, and hear the siren. Rick’s friend who flies the Los Angeles police helicopter even flew overhead. Our boys favorite part was going inside the station to get snacks. Someone had ordered pizza, so they ate some pizza and some candy too! Rick showed us a brief tour and we saw the holding cells. We met the Captain. Stories he told me, even my very favorite funniest story about bringing a turtle found in the road into the holding cell, came to life. I saw how Rick held himself differently in uniform. He was very serious and more on edge. I used to tell Rick, “you’re never home.” It was the opposite of helpful. As a working mom myself, I often wake up alone with my boys, get us all ready for school, take us to school and work, pick them up from school, and maybe, if we are lucky, we will see Rick before bedtime. Some days and even weekends we don’t see him at all. However, some weekdays Rick gets to be there to see our boys’ performances or sports even in the middle of the day due to his shift work schedule. There’s pros and cons to everything. Choose to look at the pros. I realized that, because so much of the childcare responsibility was on me, I needed help as a working mom. In my police wife devotional book, I shared how we waited a full year to get any daycare for Maverick, our first son, and it was so tough. I know it can be tough to ask for help, but read this for ideas on how to ask for help even if you feel uncomfortable. Once we finally did, I felt like it created a much better balance in my life. During very chaotic times, I have paid for professional home cleaning services as well as ordered grocery delivery. I even schedule in “take out dinner” nights during my weekly meal planning so that I can ensure I get a break from cooking. I plan easy meals to make on Rick’s days on. Adjust your routines so that you do not feel overwhelmed. Find a balance and your resentment will wash away. During the mass closures of all live concerts and performances in 2020 and 2021 in California where we live, I saw a drive-up concert offered right off the beach in Ventura, California, and jumped at it. I asked Rick if he could take the day off and texted his best friend and his new girlfriend, who also were a law enforcement family, to invite them as well. We also invited some neighbors and their kids. We all planned to attend the concert with our families. Even though it was not going to be live, I was so excited to have fun with our friends again. Two days before the concert, I remind Rick about the concert. He looks at his work schedule and realizes that he is scheduled to work. He tries to take the day off, but his boss says to him “sorry, we are so understaffed these days.” The priorities of the job and the city’s safety needs come first. My first thought was of course disappointment. I contacted Rick's bestie and his girlfriend and our neighbors to see if they could still attend. They could all attend with their significant others, but I would be attending solo with my boys. I spent the concert sitting in the back of my kid-filled mini-SUV. I was the “cool car" where all the kids hung out. I tried to enjoy myself. And I did! I danced and kicked my feet to the music while I chilled with the kids. Someone asked me this past week if I ever feel jealous of what other people have that are not police or first responder wives, such as their spouse's home at 6pm each night. I am not perfect and there was a moment that I looked over at Rick's bestie and his girlfriend sitting closely holding each other and missed Rick to pieces. But, I consciously choose to embrace this life. I am proud of Rick serving our community. He does God's work. So do I. I spent the evening with my amazing boys and their friends. It took me time to feel comfortable going somewhere solo and enjoying myself. Being married to a cop is different and unique. Early on in our marriage, I was resentful. I fought the crazy schedules, Rick’s need to work out, and everything that came with this life. I didn’t understand Rick’s requests to use a PO Box or for me to not go to certain restaurants or run in a specific area to remain safe. Overtime, I have learned to ask Rick questions rather than judge him for his requests. As I have asked questions and observed that he was right about things, I have learned to trust him. Once I learned to embrace this life, I have also learned to surround ourselves with family and friends who support us. Because police wives are alone more than others, it’s so important to build a tribe. Our boys even attend a police supporting school. Unfortunately, there is a lot of police hate locally where we live, so we had to find one that they could attend safely. Police family resources and more - Are police officers controlling in relationships? “Controlling” depends on the perspective. Read my blog on this topic. I have found that in times when I have felt that Rick was controlling, it was because he saw something I didn’t see. One of Rick’s “odd” requests when we first got married was to use a PO Box. He said that if a perpetrator that he arrested was upset with him, he could contact a friend that works at the DMV to look up our address, so he didn’t want us to use it for anything. We use a PO Box at a mailing center that does not use the “PO Box” in the address, so we can use it for any address since some things do not allow the “PO Box” to be in the address. That is probably more detail that you wanted to know. I felt that this was a reasonable request. I share more examples in my video on how my police husband changed after becoming a cop. Other requests seemed weirder like the time Rick gave me a specific map of where I could jog after having our first son, Maverick. He knew I would want to jog on a road that he knew was crime infested, because it had cute shops to jog by. He didn’t want me to be unsafe especially with a child in a stroller. I have learned the importance overtime of trying to understand my officer and where he is coming from. One time, which I share more about in this blog, he was really upset that I let a maintenance guy into our apartment to check on something. He said that he could have seen that we had guns in the house. I called him “paranoid,” which was very unhelpful. It wasn’t until years later when he told me a story of a guy dressing up as a maintenance worker to rob homes that I saw where he was coming from. I don’t have blind faith in my officer, but I have begun to see things through his perspective more and more over the years. I ask questions, but sometimes he’s not able to truly communicate in the moment why he feels a certain way. I often must wait to truly understand. I try to accommodate his needs if I feel that they are reasonable. I push back if I feel that they are not reasonable. For example, sometimes I do need to use our address to get things delivered to our home, such as groceries, as a busy mom with young children. Anything from pulling over a gang member to chat, a domestic violence call, conducting search warrants, and even a women asking about her cell phone being taken for evidence can escalate into a critical incident. My husband and police officer, Rick, has always told me that, often when they get into critical incidents, they are removed from others and their cell phones will be taken so they can be interviewed without discussing the situation with others. He told me that he would try to text me before his cell phone was removed but that I might not hear from him for hours- even 12-18 hours later. He is interviewed and assessed for mental health release back to work. If he can anticipate that his unit will be conducting search warrants, which are more likely to become critical incidents, then he will tell me ahead of time prior to the shift. Critical incident stress is the body’s reaction to a stressful, traumatic situation. Symptoms can range from psychological to physical. I have found that my husband’s general mental state is neutral. He has been an officer for 16 years. That means, based on the research, he has been through 96 critical incidents in his career. That takes a toll. He doesn’t seem to get very excited about things nor extremely sad either. I believe that being neutral helps him to face the critical incidents he experiences and remain mentally stable. My officer has what I refer to as “PTSD nightmares.” I describe them more in this free youtube video I made. I have heard from other police and veteran wives that their spouses have similar nightmares. It makes me sad. Luckily, it’s not all of the time, but it can be scary. How to help your officer with a critical incident as a police wife? When your officer is released home, he is exhausted. He has experienced a trauma, then he was interviewed in almost an accusatory way that would have legal implications, then he was assessed for his mental stability, and he literally might not have slept for 2 days. Let him sleep. Let him rest. If you need help at home, ask friends, family, or professionals. You need to step up and take care of it all on your own for a bit to let him rest. I share more about this in my blog on how I dealt with everything after Rick was injured on duty. Ask him how he’s doing. Don’t push him to talk unless he wants to. I share more about this in my blog on supporting an officer with depression. Every person is different. My husband isn’t a talker. It took me years to fully support him in a way that he needed. I’m a talker, so I didn’t get it. He has told me, “When I’m home, I just want to focus on you and the kids. That’s what makes me happy.” We are his happy place. Creating a happy home (even with the beautiful chaos of having children, pets, etc.) is your responsibility and a gift to your officer. I share tips on productivity and juggling all of the home responsibilities in this blog. I give my officer time to workout. That is his therapy. He does jiujitsu, CrossFit, and MMA. This is time away from the family. I share more about how I felt resentment over this at the beginning of our marriage in this free youtube video, but I have come to learn that his workouts are critical to his health. Of course, encourage your officer to seek medical advice if you are very concerned about them. Whiteboard Family Calendar. The whiteboard calendar is very helpful when you have young children who may not have a cell phone or read. I place our whiteboard calendar low to the ground so our boys can read it as well. The schedule challenges and the risks are two separate, but related issues. Schedule. As a police wife, we are alone more in the evenings, weekends, and holidays than other wives. There is a silver lining though. If your officer works weekends, that means he might have some week days off to be able to attend your child’s after school extracurricular activities or other special events. A lot of police couples that are parents see the benefits of this unique schedule. Additionally, I have found that I create routines for myself for weekends or evenings when my husband is working, such as watching chick flick shows when my husband is working nights and meeting up with my girlfriends on weekends. We can thrive in the challenging schedules. The schedule is a huge challenge for many wives, but you can plan ahead and make mindset and practical changes to find joy living with the chaotic schedule. Danger. A lot of police officers wives struggle with anxiety around the safety issues that our spouses face. This topic is impossible to holistically cover in a blog. It is very real, but how I deal with it is this-the statistics are in their favor to make it home safe. Fatal injuries are rare even though you may see them on the news, social media, etc. They are still very rare. Trauma, critical incidents and injury on duty that is not fatal is common as my husband has experience more than one injury; I found injury on duty as a theme in our marriage when I wrote my heelsandholster: a police wife devotional book. We can be strong in our marriages and face the injuries together. He probably gets a general schedule monthly, every six months, or each year. Once he gets that schedule, ask him for it. My husband lives day by day and it drove me crazy as a police wife asking him whether he was working each day or not. Write those days/times that he is scheduled to work down on a calendar that works for you. I love using both a Google calendar and a whiteboard family calendar. I have this calendar low so our boys can see when their daddy is working. This is one tip of many that I share in this blog about raising children of police officers. If your husband mentions that his department is anticipating a high need weekend or special event, but he is not scheduled to officially work, then write that down on your schedule too. If your husband has court, please ask him to tell you. Write down your husband’s court days on your calendars too. I believe this tip will really help police officer wives. Yes, that was a lot of writing, but having all of the official scheduled work days, special needs, court, etc. written down will help you to anticipate your family needs. But, it’s worth it. This is a lifesaver as a police officer wife. As she mentions, you can plan ahead breaks for yourself and anticipate anxiety or stressors by looking ahead with a hard copy calendar. I cannot express just how important the following two things are to me in preventing anxiety: Self Care- This means different things to everyone. For me, it means a slow, not rushed morning routine with an Iced Chai tea, working out 2-3x/week at home, cooking healthy dinners for our family most nights but giving myself a break with leftover and takeout nights, and fun with friends once a week. Stable Routines- Regardless of the police schedule, you can still create stability in routines in your home life as a police wife. In fact, I pride myself in creating the stability in my home for my children. When my husband is home, he generally follows the routines I have created. An example of my solo morning routine is here. My husband and I also have routines around spending time together. For example, when he is home, we typically prioritize hanging out with each other after our boys go to bed. Of course, this happens different days of the week depending on his schedule. My husband has been on the police department for over 16 years. He has had two major injuries since we have been married in the past 10 years. In those times when my husband was home, yet recovering from injury. I had to put on my caregiving hat. I embraced that role. In addition to caring for him two years ago when he was a major lower back surgery due to IOD and was bedridden for literally months recovering, I cared for our young boys. I did all the cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. I was also working. I was a bit on “auto” and would do whatever method was most efficient. For example, I folded the laundry right there on the floor next to our dryer before putting it away. I didn’t move it to another location and wait to fold it. It is so important that you find someone that you can trust to be a reliable source of help you for as you will often be solo parenting. My husband works about an hour away and cannot always quickly come home in an emergency, so at minimum decide on emergency childcare help whether it be family or a paid professional. We have had family referrals help with childcare providers, and once we found them, I felt like I could breathe better knowing I had help. This situation was all to familiar to my husband because his dad had been shot in the head on duty when my husband was just 5 years old. I only know a handful of specific traumatic and critical incident experiences that My husband has had, because he does not like to talk about them. He tells me that talking doesn’t help. I have learned to accept that. My husband has told me that what helps him the most is just hanging out with me and our boys and working out. My husband works out 6 days a week. He loves Crossfit and Jiujitsu. I believe that his workouts heal him. Okay, we aren’t exactly trauma healers, but I do believe that sometimes we look past just how much power we have in the home. We can create a happy home as a cops wife for our husbands to come to home to and relax. A happy home can be like a medicine. Our home isn’t always peaceful. We have two very active boys with their own activities they love and toys around the house, but generally it’s a happy home that we try to keep tidy so it’s not chaotic. My tribe in a very important time of need were two mom friends that I met in a Facebook mom group. When my boys were babies and toddlers and just two years apart, I needed people around me. We didn’t have a lot of family around to help, but I had my mom friends. We didn’t exchange babysitting nights, but that’s a great idea that some people do! The thing that really helped me was preventing loneliness by scheduling play dates at a park or inviting my mom friends over to our house on the long stretches when I knew my husband was working. Something else that really helped as a policeman’s wife was joining group fitness programs. I went to Stroller Strides, a local mom workout group. It got me out of the house with my baby each day and around other moms. Police officer wives are wonderful to have as friends because generally they’re going to empathize with you easier than others. Many departments have police wife Facebook groups, so search for your department or local area group on Facebook. Following police wife/community accounts on Instagram can help you feel less alone as well.
