Police Wife & Mom Blog
Six years ago, with a sleep-deprived eye twitch, you rocked your second baby to sleep for the third time that night alone. He looked up at you with his big, beautiful eyes. After singing him a song, you gently laid him down to sleep. Exhausted, a minute after you returned to bed, you cried as he began to cry for you again.
Veteran police wives told you that before you knew it, you wouldn’t be alone at night, your husband would promote, and he would be on a reliable schedule. You felt that day would never come. And then, before you knew it, that day came. While you don’t know how long it will last, your husband got day shift and weekdays.
What those veteran police wives didn’t tell you was just how much you learned before that moment came…
You designed your lives so you were independent regardless of your husband’s shift or unexpected overtime. You asked for help from trusted professionals for daycare, groceries, or cleaning if you needed it. Or robots—your robot vacuum seriously brings you joy when you run it before heading to bed. You built a tribe, a community, that you could lean on for everything from practical help to planning a playdate for an anticipated solo weekend or holiday.
You left frustration and resentment behind.
You learned to appreciate your husband when he was home. You prioritized your time together. You learned to scope out safe places for you to take the kids alone for fun adventures and how to meet your children’s needs even if one had to wait…
And now your children already don’t remember those many evenings and nights alone with just you. But, there is something in them that knows that, when Dad is home, it’s special, and that you are the stable one.
This story was mine, and it will be yours too. Married to my officer now for 11 years, I have been through the frustration, resentment, anxiety, and common struggles early on, but I was able to transform my life into a peaceful, stable one. I hope that my resources help you find peace in this life faster than I did.
